Voting Question: about home building costs?
I recently had my home rebuilt as a result of losing it to a tornado. I didn't want to spend much effort at the time in choosing a contractor, I just wanted to receive the project rolling so my wife and I could receive our home back and our lives back on the right track! So I gave the job to a pal/contractor and started. The job ended up way over the initial cost discussed and I just wanted to toss out the facts and receive some professional feedback for my piece of mind I guess. I will share some important facts so your feedback can be accurate. I live in LaGrange,GA about an hour and fifteen below Atlanta. The heated sq.ft. of the home is 2835. This person did do the pre-construction drawings and design pro bono. The finishes in the home are mainly over standard grade...big kitchen with Kraftmaid cabinets, granite tops and stainless steel appliances. every hardwood flooring throughout except for baths and entry hall finished with a 5$ per sq ft. tile. Master bath has a customized walk-in shower and 2nd bath has some tiny custom cabinet and shelving. The main living and kitchen area is a cathedral area with structural beams running both ways and they are wrapped with stained pine. Exterior doors were upgrades, entry being knotty alder finish. every interior doors are solid pine, stained and poly. every case and base trim is 1x4 and 1x6 staingrade pine. Closet shelving done in stained pine as well. Hardware for doors is oil rubbed bronze finish throughout. The attic trusses were designed for storage and it is decked with plywood and has tug down stair access. There are three full baths in total. Exterior is finished with hardi plank with miratech trim. every windows are low e and aluminum cladded. Most are twins with some in living area being casement. The main entry was upgraded to stack rock step fronts and flagstone treading. The landing and walkway has flagstone as well. The exposed foundation was finished with stack rock as well(65%) Overall we are very glad with the final product and I must say that the workmanship is excellent. But I just want to feel good about the whole thing entirely and needed to receive some feed back on the financial part. The project ended up costing a total of $256,000.000 Any professional comments would be appreciated! Thanks for great comments so far! I also forgot to mention that the contractor spent the first week and a half or so on demolition and removal of what was left from the original home.

Resolved Question: Help! Need to know if there is anything I can do legally?
I have quite a few personal belongings at my grandparent's home. If anything should happen to them I would like them back. It's not items that I have given them or anything, they are items that I can not fit in my current place that they said I could keep at their home. My aunt is the executor of their will, and I trust her normally I guess, but when it comes to making money off something I don't. Is there some type of legal document or something that my grandparents could add to their will, should anything happen to them - until I receive a bigger place that could protect my belongings from being considered items to be divided and sold? A lot of it is smaller kitchen appliances eg toaster oven, blender, some expensive china I received when I graduated, and honestly quite a few other things. Thanks!

Resolved Question: Need to know total power consumption of appliances so i can buy a proper UPS?
I have to buy a UPS to support 5 things. An Onkyo Home theater system (5.1 with the amp rated to 500 W, the speakers rated to 130 W max power each and the woofer rated to 130 W as well). A dvd player, a 32 " LCD samsung TV and a Belkin Modem and a Panasonic cordless phone system...Now the basic question is: How to calculate the power consumption of the home theater system - would it be equal to the amp rating or would it amp rating + every speakers + woofer...

Resolved Question: How do I get my landlord to pay for new appliances?
I know this is hardly the forum to ask legal advice, but I wanted to look if anyone has gone through what I'm putting up with right now. My condo has very old appliances, from the 80's. And now the dishwasher, fridge, and stove are just in horrible shape. Some of the racks in the dishwasher are rusting and some of the tines have chipped off, and the dishwasher doesn't even CLEAN dishes anymore. I wash them by hand, then use the dishwasher to sanitize. One of the burners on the stove doesn't work, and the oven doesn't actually heat to the right temperature. And the fridge may be worst of every; my food gets freezerburn every the time and sometimes I worry I'm going to arrive home to a fridge full of spoiled food. The landlord is upside down on the property, so she refuses to replace anything. I've gotten so fed up with the situation that I was just going to buy some cheap appliances to replace them, and a nicer fridge that I would eventually take with me when my lease is finally up. Seems like a good deal for her, right? Not in her mind. She told me she would SUE me if I replaced her appliances and had the old ones hauled away (like they're even worth anything at this point), and she wasn't willing to provide me a place to put the old ones. So I basically can't replace the appliances unless I can store the old ones myself, which is nice of difficult for a two-bedroom condo. This situation is getting ridiculous to say the least. Anyone ever run into a situation like this? I'm afraid I'll end up punching this lady the next step I take, so any help that might help me keep my sanity would be much appreciated.

Resolved Question: Problem with my car.....need help ASAP!?
Ok, my car has a bit of an odd problem that I can't seem to figure out. I'm going to explain everything in detail that has happened recently. Car Details: 2002 Chevy Cavalier, 140,000 miles exactly, NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT Over the last year and a half, I have taken my car into the mechanic to do some repairs. My new car recieved a new catalyst converter, ignition tune up, two new o2 censors, and new coils. A couple of months ago, I was driving on the highway and suddenly my car stalled on me. That was only once and I managed to receive home without any further problems. I left my car alone for about 2 days. After that, I drove it once again on the highway. It stalled on me repeadetly to the point where I couldn't steer it for more than a few 100 yards without it gagging on me. However, I managed to receive it onto the city streets and it ran fine and had continued to run fine, no stalling or anything. I haven't even bothered to steer on the highway since. Over the last month though while driving on the city streets, my car has started to stall on me yet again when ever I receive past 50/55 mph or 3 rpms and when i also have other appliances running such as radio and the heat. It got so bad to the point where I haven't even been able to receive out of my subdivision. I recently charged my battery and my car has managed to run fine in the city streets again, but I know it won't last. My question is what the heck is wrong with my car? I have a feeling it may be that i need a gas filter or new battery, but I'm not sure how that is tied in with my car stalling out, especially when I try to receive up to a high speed. I would really appreciate if someone can give me a suggestion on what to do. I would take it to a mechanic, but I want that to be a last resort, especially if this ends up being a simple problem. One final thing, I got my alternator checked and its fine.

Resolved Question: Should I buy a home that needs these repairs or not? what do I do?
we found a home we like,in escrow, should close n fund soon, but we have not yet signed last final docs. 2003, beautiful landscaped front and back yard. back yard, is big with, very nice patio n slab, nice sprinkler system. home is 2230 sq ft, 4 bed, 3 bath, with loft and office. needs new carpet, paint, throughout. home needs a lot of cleaning as far as scrubbing bathrooms, windows and floors, garage has lots of mice droppings and kitchen n home has some. the inspection was yesterday and there are some things.....leak in attic at spare bathroom, tiny leak at close water heater vent on top of home, deck in master bed unsafe railing and floor is lil loose, relax were minor such as loose bolts, rusted frame in shower, loose toilets, dryer vent clogged, pipe vent in attic for condensation needs to be cleaned/blow out...they had a spa but it has leaks, and it kept kicking on n off, inspector said we needed to have a someone arrive look n give us an estimate to look if it can be repairable, may be too much to bother with. oh and noticed lots of big spiders in home that were caught on sticky pads we left out a month ago, and a saw a huge live one in the home, spiders are big and scare me too. but i guess terminex or someone like that can take care of that? my feelings are, we adore the area/city....it is on a very nice cul de sac, sits close the end of one, school is walking distance for spring n summer ( 1 mi). we would walk our kids/i would steer other wise, home is not open when you arrive in, like it lacks a family room, formal living lacks dining room. there is just a tiny living area with electric flame place that is open to kitchen, open to the sliding door that leads to the back yard. so you can look kids playing in yard from kit and living room (good). master bedroom tiny, but bath area big, one of my child's room is tiny, plus their bath is super tiny. we have been looking for months, and cannot find a yard that big with privacy, there are nicer homes that are open and have move in ready feel, but neighbors home are close together and most lots are very tiny front n back. in the home we are looking at, we have to put in carpet + paint+ fix repairs here. hubby is very picky on yard tho, likes big yards n privacy. we would have to finance the carpet and repairs. OR we buy a brand new home that are not yet built will be built this spring, we are renters, so no pressure on moving with in a time frame....prices are at top of our budget, a lil smaller, will lack loft and office, school is on other side of freeway, no park close by to walk to, larger living room but No formal, or formal dining, larger kitchen and eating area, may be able to pick lot, lots nice new features such as..... every these premium features arrive standard in The New home at no extra cost. In the kitchen • Granite counter-tops • Euro-style cabinetry with knobs • Whirlpool stainless steel appliances - Energy Star dishwasher - 30” 5-burner gas range - Microwave with built In ventilation • 20 gauge stainless steel sinks In the bathrooms • Integrated sink with cultured marble tops • Vanities with built In drawers • Tri-view style medicine cabinets • Dual flush toilets • Separate tub and shower Mechanical technology • Tankless hot water system • Non-corrosive PEX plumbing • Optimized heating and air conditioning • Home Run electrical harnesses • CAT5 and RG6 cable throughout Premium trim work • Dual pane low-e vinyl windows • Paneled window boxes with casings • Extra tall 3 1/4” baseboard trim • Raised panel interior doors Structural enhancements • 2" x 6" exterior walls with R-21 insulation • Structural sheathing around the entire home • Reflective radiant barrier attic sheathing • 11” R-30 attic insulation • Laser-leveled foundations Outside the home • Electric garage door opener with remote • Vinyl maintenance-free fencing • Lanscaped front yard with xeriscape watering none of these repairs were disclosed and it is a short sale, bank will not pay for repair, due to they have lost over 100k from sellers not keeping up on it. kids tub is tiny not bathroom, they have double sink as well. there is room to "add on" to 2003 home in living room, in future.. out side on side is big to put a extra 20x20.

Resolved Question: Will rubber protect me from a shock from electrical home appliances?
I got a blender/food processor appliance, it works brilliant and I only have to hold the button down for a short amount of time until even difficult frozen blueberries are completely pulverized. The only problem is that occasionally when I have released or almost fully released(it happens too quickly to tell)the button that makes it blend a tiny electrical looking light sparks underneath the machine. It has little legs that it sits on so I only look a flash of light around the edges and I'm thinking other than that it works perfectly and I did receive it second hand so is it safe to use if I press the button down with something dry and rubber and not touch it at every with my skin. Will it shock me through the rubber? I'm not talking about gloves either, I mean a really big thick eraser, a thick rubber band or something like that. Unless I can use normal rubber gloves. If you think I should toss it out let me know because it actually came pretty cheap anyway, I just hate to toss something so useful away.

Voting Question: Renting house with horrible water, is it mine or the landlords responsibility?
I am currently renting a home for $650 a month, utilities and every appliances are my responsibility. I was told by my landlord that the water has some iron in it but it is not horrible. Much to our surprise, when we moved in and used the water, it is horrid!!! I thought that it may just be because the well and pump had not been used in two weeks. But we have been here over a week now, doing dishes, taking showers daily and the water is still coming out of the faucet yellow! It smells to high heaven like sulfur, and is completely undrinkable. The water actually caused the bathtub to turn brown in a matter of 3 days! It has gotten so bad that if we soak our Correll dishes for ten minutes it is also turning them brown. I purchased a PUR filter for our sink for drinking water but it has been 9 days and the light is already blinking yellow as the filter is almost junk. Is it going to be my responsibility to keep purchasing these filters and or rent a whole home filter? Or is this going to be a matter or telling the landlord that he has to provide the home with half-way decent water? I mean it sounds like I'm crazy, but when we boil the water it actually creates an orange film on the top of the water! This water is not only undrinkable, it is destroying my property and the home. Please help me on what direction I need to go with this issue!!

Open Question: Can I just flick the power strip switch, to turn off appliances, or should I turn off the appliances first?
I want to plug appliances into a power strip/surge protector, so I can turn them every off with one switch, saving my energy and home energy. ...but, do I need to go around and push the off button on every the appliances, first...or can I just flick the surge protector switch? Is that safe, or would it be as potentially damaging, to the appliances, as a blackout? It's a PC monitor, 40 watt speakers, a printer and a PS3 slim...and sometimes an external difficult steer.

Voting Question: Which place would you put seed money to pick up the USA economy, rich people or poor people.?
Remember Demand creates jobs, Republicans say , the wealthy are the job creators. But they already have the money and didn't create jobs.or created jobs with low wadges and the worker had no buying power. A worker on low pay, says it every, NO buying power. Would we B better off if the worker got the breaks so he can buy the cars, homes, Appliances, stakes, again. No one is saying just give the needy money, Of course the needy must work for it, but Jobs that take you up, not down. Good paying jobs with payed health care and retirement is what we need , not a job were you receive sick, your fired or file bankrupt over the doctor bills.

Resolved Question: I need to find an inexpensive coffee and espresso maker for my home.?
I am sleepy of spending so much money at coffee shops for espresso drinks. My coffee maker just broke so this would be a perfect time to replace the coffee maker and purchase an espresso maker. I don't mind if they are combined or separate. The quantity of appliances is overwhelming so I thought I would reach out to the Yahoo community for suggestions. To clarify the question a little more - I'm looking for the brand and model number of the coffee/espresso makers that members of the community would recommend.

Resolved Question: Comparing costs of kitchen remodel: What is the typical cost of kitchen remodel if everything is "out of ...?
... the box" from a store such as Loew's or Home Depot compared to a custom remodel where everything is fitted specifically for the kitchen? I know it would vary depending on what appliances are being replaced, so let's assume just the stove/oven ("cooker" as they say in the Midwest) will be replaced. Thanks.

Resolved Question: Girlfriend and I are purchasing a home but she is the only one on title....?
So here is my concern. We are "purchasing home" but she is the only one on the loan because she has no debt everything is in my name. Cell phone, electric, cars etc. So we decided to put it in her name to play it safe with the debt to income ratio. But i am having concerns now because we put back money for everything ( to buy floor, carpet, granite and even closing cost). She got some inheritance money from her grandpa that past away recently and I suggested to put that in another account for emergency purposes. If we wanted to buy granite or something for the home and we didn’t have enough we could dip into that account and pay it back. She wanted to use this money for the home so i thought that would be a good idea but to stay away from it as much as possible because it was such a nice thing to do for her. Here is where my concerns are coming in. She now wants to use that inheritance money to pay the full closing cost and down payment on the home. And my concern is I am about to dish out money to buy granite, appliances, floor, carpet etc and I am not on the loan, we are not married and she is using her inheritance money to pay for the closing. So if something happens and we break up she has the evidence and the agreement that she is on the loan and se paid for the whole closing. So my question is...in Texas is there a contract I can write up and have notarized or some law in Texas that states that everything I put into this foreclosure home is 50/50. So is we break up and we spent 1000.00 dollars on granite and we break up I am entitled to receive my 500.00 dollars back since its "her home". I do not want to be out 500.00 when i spent the money to fix up "her home".

Resolved Question: When are you going to stop spending money we don't have to spend?
I'd like to look: a balanced budget, government departments streamlined for efficiency, bring troops home, no overseas financial support except for Israel. Investment in renewable energy in US. No more bailouts of any companies or industries. Tighter control over government contacts and awards spending. Audits of every government sectors, property, equipment and contracts etc. Enforce illegal immigration. Repeal Obamacare and eliminate every federally involved spending in abortion direct or indirect. curtail unemployment extensions. Stay away from more government incentives for (mortgages, cars, appliances, solar, rail and farming etc) I'd like to look your undivided attention on unemployment and how to fix it by providing stability and not uncertainty in the economy. Introduce flat income tax of 10% across the board and eliminate every other Federal income taxes. Eliminate government employee overtime. Do more with less like every other organization has to do. Reduce unneccessary government travel, flights, meals, cabs, limos and accomodations - use more web conferences and communications. Before spending a single red cent ask yourself "how does this spending create a positive impact on the people of the US?" Is it moral and is it the right thing to do for the greater part of the population in the US? Does it support family values and uphold the law and the constitution? What is the return on investment? Is the return adequate or is there another cheaper alternative with greater return? Is it important and is it time sensitive? You could do it if you were willing!

Voting Question: I am rennovating my home - can I replace all power sockets with USB?
what if I installed a mainframe (with a UPS of course) and replaced every my power sockets with USB instead (or if not entirely replaced, at least place some additional USB ports to the walls directly connected to the mainframe with cord)? That seems chilly enough and I can think of numerous applications to it. Would that work? Is USB more energy consuming that a direct plug for household appliances?

Resolved Question: My dishwasher sprung a leak when my home inspection (house sale) was taking place.Do I spring for a new one?
In the contract, it states that every appliances are in working order. The Inspector ran the dishwasher during the home inspection and a flood of water came out the back of the machine. We have been using the machine for the past 10 years, without incident. It decides to act up just when the Inspection takes place. Now the buyer wants a reduction in the purchase price as she feels that she should have the appliance in working order. Is she entitled to the amount of a new machine?

Resolved Question: Crack addicts digging through trash, breaking and entering?
I bought a home about 8 months ago. A short while after I encountered a lady who appeared to be in her forties walking in the road. I tried to be cordial. She offered to clean my home which because of the economy didn't seem odd at the time. She asked about my dogs (purebred German Shepherds) and their value and whether they were vicious. As a new neighbor I naively told her "don't worry, they're nice." She asked about them having puppies and how much I would sell them for then remarked that she wouldn't be able to afford them. I left thinking she was just odd. Since then I spoke to her twice and had the EXACT SAME conversation. She again offer to clean the inside of my home, asked about the dogs, etc. One month ago, when I had to be home for the cable guy, she knocked on my door. I was surprised it was her and not att. She had with her an empty appliance box like the nice that a washer comes in, maybe 3'x3'x4.5'. She asked if she could leave it next to my home while she collected something else from down the road. (?!) She never returned to receive the box and when it rained that night I had to deal with a giant soggy cardboard box. This morning I arrive out to look my trash bag 2 feet in front of my door with a big hole in it and the trash collectors just leaving the block. In the middle of the steer way was this lady with another clear trash bag that appeared to be full of cans. I was shocked and asked her if she was going through my trash. She said it was the city because I wasn't recycling and did I have a green recycling bin. (?!) I was furious that my trash hadn't gotten picked up and that I had trash in my yard from the hole that she apparently ripped. I told I was going to call the cops and she grabbed her cans quickly and scooted away as quickly as I have ever seen her move. Now I think back to the time she knocked on my door in the afternoon and her constant offers to arrive inside and clean my home as very suspicious. Going through trash for cans at 7 am seems like such crack addict behavior. As I mentioned I do have 2 good size dogs (that wouldn't hurt a chihuahua) that are home alone for 9 hrs while I am at work but worry about the neighbors whose houses are empty and even the possibility of identity theft from the trash. I called the cops and they said they would check it out and if I look her in my trash again to call back but dismissed my crack addict theory. How should I handle this? Why is she knocking on doors where the home appears to be empty? For every she knew I should have been at work. Would have been pretty coincidental that she knocked on the one day I stayed home.

Resolved Question: FOR PEOPLE WHO'S HOUSES ARE HAUNTED!?
Rude answers will be reported. Only answer if you know about ghosts or if your home is haunted. No, I will never use a ouija board or anything like that, I'm a Christian. I'm just interested in figuring out why it is haunting me. I believe in ghosts but I don't believe that they are dead people you either go to heaven or hell. Anyway, my home is very haunted. Here are some of my experiences. - whispering really close to my ear (I even feel air against my ear when it happens) - footsteps and no one there - shadow people - shadows walking out of the corner of my eye and when I turn, nothing there - black snake things on the wall - white apparition leaping at me - certain spots in the home getting EXTREMELY hot where there wouldn't be a draft - icy chills - poltergeist activity (things moving around right in front of me) - doors opening and slamming by themselves (doorknob turns when it happens too) - stuff being thrown at me when there is no one else at home - electrical appliances turning on and off by themselves - dogs staring and barking at nothing - curtains moving when no one is there - piano notes being played when no one is there I've had MANY more experiences. And I would like to know yours and how you deal with them. Again, rude answers will be reported. If you don't believe in ghosts, chilly, don't answer. Btw, I researched my home a few weeks ago. I learned that there was slavery in my area of town and when I was little I saw the silhouette of an African American man walk across my dad's room and disappear. I also learned that a man with the last name of Brown lived here and my little brother had said before that a white figure pointed at him and said "Brown". For years we thought it was calling him brown (silly, I know) but now that we know the guy's last name was brown... No, everyone in my family has experienced it. Mike, I don't have schizophrenia. Everyone in my family and everyone that has been in my home has experienced something. Peter, exactly. That's what I'm wondering too. No I won't report you, you aren't being rude. :) and yeah, the nice of answers I want are un rude ones.

Voting Question: Best way to get sub-lease applicants?
I leased an apartment for a year and I need to sublease it (allowable in my contract). A family member is not well, the area is terrible and I got a job back home. Does anyone have any good tips or places to advertise for an apartment? Its a good apartment (new appliances, space etc) and there's only one other person besides me for $285/month. Is craiglist a good start or local college boards? Do I list the rent per month in the ad? Any advise is greatly appreciated.
